What do the pictograms associated with a film mean?

What is the BienVu/GoedGezien Classification?

The BienVu classification helps viewers understand when a film or programme may contain elements that could affect the physical, mental, or moral development of minors. Each audiovisual work is assessed across several categories of potentially sensitive content — such as tension, fear, harmful behaviour or unfair representation — in order to determine an appropriate age recommendation. Thanks to this clear and consistent system, parents, educators and young people have a reliable guide for choosing content that aligns with different stages of development.

Age Classifications

AL – All Audiences
Indicates that the programme contains no elements considered potentially harmful for minors. No content icon is displayed, except in cases of inappropriate language, which may appear even for AL.

6+
May include very mild elements that could unsettle young children (such as brief moments of tension or mild unrealistic scenes). Suitable from age 6, though younger children may still be sensitive to certain moments.

10+
May contain moderately intense elements, such as repeated but non‑extreme tension or fear, or depictions of regulated behaviours shown within an educational context. Better suited for viewers aged 10 and up.

12+
Includes stronger or more frequent content, such as heightened tension, unsettling situations, or inappropriate behaviour shown without a guiding context. Recommended from age 12.

16+
Contains impactful or realistic elements, including intense or frightening scenes, risky behaviour, or settings where harmful actions may be normalised. Not advised for viewers under 16.

18+
Reserved for extreme content intended strictly for adults. Not suitable for minors.

Content Classifications

Violence
Indicates the presence of physical conflict or harmful actions, ranging from mild tension to more intense or realistic situations. Any depiction of severely inappropriate aggressive behaviour leads automatically to a higher age category.

Fear / Disturbing Elements
Covers frightening scenes, characters or atmospheres, from mild unease to more intense, unsettling situations. Higher intensity or repetition results in a higher age recommendation.

Sensitive Interpersonal Content
Refers broadly to close or intimate interactions, risky behaviour, or inappropriate actions between individuals. The classification depends on how clearly these behaviours are shown, how often they appear and the context in which they occur. Content intended solely for adult stimulation falls under the 18+ category.

Addictive Substances
Warns viewers of the presence of alcohol, tobacco, medication or other substances. The age classification depends on how frequently these substances appear, whether they are legal or illegal, and whether the context is educational, neutral or presented positively.

Offensive Language
Signals the presence of strong or disrespectful language. This icon does not affect the age category and may appear even with an AL classification.

Discrimination
Indicates negative or demeaning representation of individuals or groups based on characteristics such as background, belief, identity, or ability. When such content is framed within an educational or corrective context, the icon may be removed. Without such context, it triggers a minimum classification of 12+.
